Plants small to medium-sized, 1.5–2.5 cm high, in loose to dense tufts. Stems erect, simple, rarely branched; central strand weakly differentiated. Leaves densely arranged, appressed to imbricate when dry, erect-spreading when moist, slightly reflexed, lanceo-ligulate, blunt to rounded-obtuse at the apex, rarely weakly apiculate; margins entire, usually weakly recurved on both sides; costa ending below the apex; upper leaf cells quadrate to rounded-hexagonal, densely covered with numerous simple papillae; basal cells rounded-rectangular to elliptic, smooth. Sporophytes terminal on lateral short branches. Setae ca. 1.0–1.5 cm long; capsules obovoid; opercula conic-rostrate, with a slender long beak; annuli differentiated, of 1–2 rows of cells, persistent.
