Usually deciduous trees. Scaly buds, often resinous. Flowers showy, bracteate. Calyx tubular or campanulate, deciduous. Petals 4-5, clawed. Stamens usually 7. Capsule more or less leathery, the valves coriaceous. Seeds 1-3, with a coriaceous and glaucous testa, hilum prominent.
A genus of about 13 species distributed in temperate America, S.E. Europe and S. and E. Asia. Represented here by 1 species.
