Trees, shrubs or herbs. Leaves simple, alternate, glabrous: Inflorescence leaf opposed, usually a raceme. Flowers small, apetalous, bisexual or unisexual, regular. Plants dioecious. Stamens few to many on a disc, polyandrous. Carpels 2 to many, free or united; ovary superior; ovule 1 in each loculus. Fruit a berry or 1 seeded drupe.
A family of about 12 genera and l00 species with many ornamental plants. They are mostly tropical or sub tropical in America, chiefly South America. A few species are found in Europe, Asia and Africa.
