Trees or shrubs, often polygamous, with alternate to subopposite and exstipulate leaves. Flowers regular, disposed in spikes, racemes or cymes. Calyx campanulate or obconical, 3-5-lobed or toothed, persistent. Corolla infundibuliform or campanulate, 4-5(-8) lobed. Stamens as many as and alternating with the lobes. Filaments usually hairy at the base, anthers subexaerted. Ovary undivided, 4-locular with 1 ovule in each locule. Style terminal, doubly bipartite. Fruit a 1-seeded (by abortion) drupe. Seeds exalbuminous.

250 species, mainly tropical America. Represented in Pakistan by 6 species, of which 2 are exclusively cultivated.
