Scapose perennials, slender to ± robust, sub-glabrous to villous. Leaves radical, simple, long petioled, margin variously lobed. Flowers umbellate, showy, of shades from pink to purple, drooping, borne on a well developed scape from 14-50 cm long. Pedicels very unequal in size. Bracts incised at the apex. Corolla campanulate, with a short tube and much exceeding the calyx. Stamens 5; filaments adnate at the base of the corolla; anthers apiculate. Ovary ovoid, with many ovules; style slender, stigma capitate. Capsule dehisching by valves. Seeds up to 40 in number, angled, vesiculose, dark brown.
c. 10 species, found from C. Europe to Japan; the Sakhalin Islands and the Himalaya. Also replesented in the C. Elburz mts. in N. Iran. Represented in Pakistan by 2 species.
