Perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate, pellucid-punctate. Flowers large and showy in bracteate racemes. Sepals 5. Petals 5, the lowest declinate. Stamens free, 10. Ovary 5-locular; style slender. Capsule deeply 5-lobed, woody. Seeds subglobose, black.
