Gregarious, dioecious shrubs. Young shoots viscid. Leaves exstipulate, simple, alternate. Flowers small, regular, in short terminal or axillary panicles. Sepals 3-5, imbricate or valvate. Petals absent. Stamens atta¬ched outside the disc. Disc annular in the female flower, absent in the male flower. Ovary sessile, 2-6 locular, 2 ovules in each locule. Fruit a septicidal capsule, 2-6 valved; valves winged at the back; seeds lenticular to sub-globose, 1-2 in each locule.

A genus of 60 species, mostly Australian, widely distributed in the warmer parts of most countries.
