Suberect, densely branched shrubs, branches usually spinescent; stipules small, interpetiolar, triangular, long pointed. Flowers solitary axillary. Calyx campanulate, 5-lobed. Corolla 5-lobed. Anthers almost sessile. Ovary glabrous, 2-loculed with 4-pendulous ovules. Fruit baccate, subglobose with 2-4 seeds.
A monotypic genus, distributed in Subtropical Himalayas. Often included in Gardenia, but differs in having spinescent branches, 2-loculed ovary with 4-pendulous ovules.
