Dioecious deciduous shrubs or small trees. Leaves linear-lanceolate. Male flowers in axillary clusters; tepals 2, opposite, longer than the perianth tube; stamens 4. Female flowers solitary, pedicellate; perianth tubular, shorter than the tepals. Fruit a utricle. Seed oblong, shiny, with scanty endosperm.
3 species; Europe, C. Asia and the Himalayas. Represented in Pakistan by 1 species.
