Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves variously lobed. Flowers in cincinni, ± irregular, variously coloured. Calyx enlarging and enclosing the fruit. Corolla infundibuliform, 5-lobed; lobes ± unequal, imbricate in bud. Stamens 5, attached about the middle or at the base of the corolla tube; anthers usually exserted, oblong, dehiscing longitudinally. Ovary bilocular. Style filiform, stigma subcapitate. Capsule (pyxidium) erect, enclosed in the calyx, dehiscence by a lid. Seeds many, compressed.

20 species, often hard to separate; Mediterranean to S.W. & C. Asia, Represented in Pakistan by 4 native species.

3 (2) Leaves ovate-oblong. Calyx urceolate (in fruit), less than 1/2 cleft: lobes broad triangular-aristate, 4-6 mm long. Filaments purplish suffused. Seeds ± 1.2 mm long, pitted   3 Hyoscyamus niger
+ Leaves lanceolate to oblanceolate. Calyx campanulate (in fruit), c. 1/2 cleft; lobes triangular subulate, 7-10 mm long. Filaments not purplish-suffused. Seeds ± 1.6 mm long, rugose-tuberculate   4 Hyoscyamus squarrosus
