Evergreen shrubs or trees. Leaves alternate, petiolate, glabrous, glandu¬lar-dentate or crenate, with caducous stipules. Racemes axillary or terminal, elongated, many-flowered. Flowers small, perigynous. Sepals, petals and stamens 5. Ovary semi-inferior, bilocular; ovules few to numerous, biseriate. Fruit a conically elongate septicidal capsule. Seeds many, elongated, testa loose, more or less protruded at each end.
A genus of 15 species, mostly found in N.W. Himalayas to Japan, the Philippine Islands and South Eastern United States of America. Represented in W. Pakistan by 1 species only.
