Annual. Leaf-blades flat; ligule a short membrane. Inflorescence a dense ovoid or subcylindrical to subglobose panicle. Spikelets laterally compressed, the rhachilla prolonged; glumes subequal, linear, membranous, 1-nerved, with a long densely ciliate setaceous tip; lemma membranous, 5-nerved, almost as long as the glumes, hairy at the base, with 2 long apical bristles and a dorsal geniculate awn; palea shorter than the lemma; stamens 3.
A monotypic genus of the Mediterranean region and Southwest Europe.
