Perennial. Leaf-blades linear; ligule a line of hairs. Inflorescence a single raceme, terminal on the culm or from auxiliary branches; raceme fragile, flat, with 2 sessile and 1 pedicelled spikelet at each node (rarely 1 sessile and 2 pedicelled) or 1 sessile and 1 pedicelled; internodes linear, usually widening upwards, the pedicels free. Sessile spikelet 2-flowered, flat across the back, callus truncate; lower glume subcoriaceous, 2-keeled, densely ciliate on the back and kneels; lower floret male with hyaline lemma and palea; upper floret bisexual, the lemma entire and awnless; caryopsis oblong, terete. Pedicelled spikelet similar to the sessile or shorter, both florets male.
A monotypic genus in Southwest Asia and northern Africa.
