Rhizomatous perennials. Leaf-blades flat or convolute, glaucous. Inflorescence a spike. Spikelets 3-5(-7)-flowered, subsessile, usually imbricate, solitary, paired or in groups of up to 7 at each node of the tough rhachis; rhachilla disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets; glumes narrowly lanceolate to linear-subulate covering the sides of the lower florets, 1-5 nerved, awned or awn-less; lemmas lanceolate, 5-7-nerved, awned or awnless; palea 2-keeled.
A genus of about 50 species in Europe, North and Central Asia and North America; 1 species occurs in Pakistan.
At one time the species of Leymus were included in Elymus. Recently, however, generic concepts in Triticeae have been revised in the light of more accurate typification. A number of species of Elymus have been transferred to Leymus whilst almost the whole of Agropyron has been incorporated in the more widely circumscribed Elymus. It is now clear that number of spikelets at a node is not an important generic character in this part of the tribe.
