Annuals or perennials. Leaf-blades linear, flat. Inflorescence an open panicle. Spikelets elliptic, acute, slightly dorsally compressed, the rhachilla produced; glumes persistent, subequal, membranous, 3-nerved; lemmas elliptic, shorter than the glumes or as long as them, acute, coriaceous, becoming extremely hard and shining in fruit, 5-nerved, awnless; callus very short, glabrous; palea as long as the lemma and similar in texture.
A genus of 6 or 7 species, mostly in Europe and temperate Asia, but one species in North America; 1 species occurs in Pakistan.
