Trees small. Leaves opposite, simple, ovate, acuminate, entire. Flowers in small, sessile, bracteate heads which are arranged in trichotomous cymes. Calyx ovoid-cylindrical, subtruncate. Corolla salver-shaped; lobes 4-8. Anthers 2, subsessile. Ovary 2-celled; style cylindrical, very shortly bifid. Capsule orbicular, compressed parallel to the partition.
Species 2, distributed in India, Sumatra, Java.
Nyctanthes has been put under Verbenaceae by some authors recently.
