Small trees or shrubs. Leaves large, oblong to orbicular; margins crenate. Flowers bisexual, appearing before the leaves and surrounded by large bracts. Calyx gamosepalous, adhering to the ovary. Corolla lacking. Stamens many; filaments short, erect; anthers dehiscing by valves. Ovary bilocular; styles 2. Seed 1 in each loculus.
A monotypic genus found in the Himalayas and Afghanistan. It differs from Parrotia in having more stamens and obtuse anthers with erect filaments which open by valves.
