Herbs or shrubs. Leaves alternate, rarely opposite, entire or toothed. Flowers in dichasial cymes, sessile or pedicellate. Calyx lobes obsolete or conspi¬cuous. Corolla oblique, split to the base on one side; lobes subequal, spreading. Stamens with free anthers. Ovary usually inferior, 2-loculed; ovules l-2 in each, erect; style simple with pollen cup enclosing a truncate or 2 lobed stigma. Fruit a drupe.
A genus with 80-100 tropical and sub-tropical species; mostly Australian and Polynesian.
