Annuals or perennials. Leaf-blades setaceous, flat or involute. Inflorescence a contracted panicle. Spikelets 4-10-flowered, the uppermost florets often reduced, laterally compressed, rhachilla disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets. Glumes subequal, strongly nerved with scarious margins, much longer than the lowest lemma and ± enclosing the spikelet; lemmas rounded on the back, membranous, hyaline on the margins and at the bifid or bibbed tip, 9-nerved, awnless or with a very short awn in the sinus; palea as long as or nearly as long as the lemma, 2-keeled; anthers 3.

A genus of 5 species in Africa and from the Mediterranean region to Pakistan and Kashmir. 2 species occur in Pakistan.
