Caespitose perennial with rigid culms. Leaf-blades flat or involute. Inflorescence a narrow cylindrical spiciform panicle with very short branches. Spikelets strongly laterally compressed, the rhachilla disarticulating above the glumes; glumes ± persistent, unequal or subequal, often shorter than the lemma, 1-nerved, keeled; lemma obtuse, 1-nerved, mucronate or shortly aristate; palea shorter than or equalling the lemma, 2-nerved; stamens 3, filaments enlarged at the base. Caryopsis ellipsoid, obtuse, beaked; pericarp free, membranous, thin.

A genus with a single species in coastal regions of the Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Socotra, Arabia, Pakistan (Sind) and Northwest India.
