Perennial, rhizome erect. Leaves all floating, orbicular, rounded-oval, 12-30 cm, basal sinus deep, entire, obtuse-subacute, veins conspicuous, convergent. Flowers white (6-) 6.4-8 (-12) cm in diameter. Receptacle weakly 4-angled. Sepals ovate-oblong, obtuse or acuminate, ± equal to or slightly shorter than petals. Petals 15-18, white outermost longest and innermost smallest, obtuse, elliptic - narrowly ovate, 2.5-4.5 x 1.5-2.5 cm. Stamens many, anthers with very small appendages. Stigmatic rays 6-12 (40), red (rarely yellow), concave in centre. Seeds 3-4 mm in diameter.
Type: Habitat in paluldosis, fossis Bohemiae (PR).
Reported from Kashmir by Stewart, l.c. Distribution: Europe, Central Asia, Kashmir.
