Tufted perennial, culms (15-)20-90(-100) cm high, erect or geniculately ascending. Leaf-blades up to 18 cm long, 1-7 mm wide, scabrid. Spike slender, (2.5-)3-8.5(-9.5) cm long, greenish to greyish-purple; rhachis scabrid-hairy on the margins, fragile. Central spikelet sessile (rarely subsessile); glumes setaceous, 4-10(-11.5) mm long, scabrid; lemma lanceolate, (4.5-)5-8-9) mm long, scabrid to puberulous; awn (0.6-)l-5(-7.5) mm long; anthers (2.3-)2.7-5 mm long. Lateral spikelets usually well-developed and male, sometimes rudimentary, pedicellate; glumes setaceous, (3-)4.5-10(-11) mm long, scabrid; lemma (3-) 3.5-6.5 mm long.
