Climbing shrubs or rarely trees, branches and petioles prickly. Leaves bipinnate; stipules small. Inflorescence axillary raceme or terminal panicle. Bract rarely persistent. Calyx segments 5, imbricate, unequal, the lowest exterior and larger. Petals 5, imbricate, subequal or the upper most inner petal dissimilar. Stamens 10, free, anthers uniform. Ovary sessile or stipitate, 2-many ovuled; style filiform. Fruit flat, membranous, indehiscent or tardily dehiscent, winged along the upper suture. Seeds few, compressed, kidney-shaped or orbicular.

A genus with about 35 species, distributed in Old World tropics and China.
