Very similar to the previous species, but differs in the mat-forming main stems, up to 50 (-100) cm long, with sterile or fertile branches erect or ascending, inflorescence spikes in flower and fruit c. 5-7 mm in diameter, bracts closely overlapping; seeds smooth and glossy.
Type: India, Madras: Tranquebar, Klein (B-WILLD).
Distribution: Australia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and tropical East Africa.
Earlier records from Pakistan (R.R.Stewart, l.c. 217. 1972) seem based on misidentifications of A. macrostachyum. (cf. Freitag in Ali & Ghaffar, eds., Plant Life of South Asia 76. 1991).
