Salicornia perfoliata Forssk., Fl. Aeg. -Arab. 3. t. 1. 1775; Halostachys perfoliata Moq. in DC., Prodr. 13(2): 148. 1849 - ex parte.

A stout, juicy-succulent shrub, erect or ascending, up to 1 m. Leaves alternate, short, almost globose, perfoliate, 2-3 (-4) x 3-5 mm, fleshy- thick, with rounded apices, looking like obliquely swollen nodes. Spikes short, compact, 10-15 mm long, axillary from the upper nodes. Flowers perfect or pistillate, in groups of three.

Type: Saudi Arabia, Jiddah & Ghomsodae, Forsskhal (C-Herb.Forsskål).

Distribution: N.E. Africa, Nubia, Arabia to Pakistan, Baluchistan extreme S.W. coast (cf. Freitag, Fl. et Veg. Mundi 9: 282. fig. 1. 1991).

An easily identified shore species.
