2. Haloxylon griffithii (Moq.) Boiss., Fl. Or. 4: 950. 1879; Stewart, l.c. 223; Hedge, l.c. 323.

Whitish glaucous subshrub, sub-farinose 10-80 cm high, branched from base; leaves (1-) 4-5 (-8) mm long, linear ± broad-based, erect and incurved, floral leaves reduced on short spikes. Inflorescence in terminal spikes giving an impression of a panicle; flowers quite distant. Perianth segments ovate, obtuse, up to 1.5 mm long. Stamens 5; fruiting perianth wings c. 8 mm across, white to pinkish or yellowish.

Two subspecies can be recognized:


1 Plants up to 80 cm; leaves 1-2.5 mm; stems slender (distributed in southern regions).   2a subsp. griffithii
+ Plants up to 40 cm high; leaves 2.5-8 mm with sturdier stem (distributed in northern regions).   2b subsp. wakhanica
