Leaves oblong to oval or narrowly oval-elliptic, distinctly acuminate at the apex. Flowers (4-) 5-7 mm, longer and narrower in proportion than in var. aspera.
Type: Mexico, Berlandier 79, 104, 105 (all three numbers on a single specimen) (G-DC, lectotype) (microfiche 2196 No. 20!).
Material of this variety has only been seen from northerly Pakistan. Like var. aspera, it is widespread in the warmer regions of the world as a weed.
