A glabrous perennial, 30-75 cm tall. Rhizome well developed. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, dentate or entire. Flowers in dense corymbose cymes, white or red.

Type: Described from Europe.
Distribution: Widely cultivated.
‘Red Valeriana’ is of Mediterranean origin and adventive elsewhere; often grown in gardens here.
