  • Celtis australis var. eriocarpa (Decne.) Hook. f.

    Deciduous tree with young branches pubescent. Leaves ovate, acuminate, base subequal, cuneate or rounded to subcordate, serrate to subentire. Flowers in dense axillary clusters, appear before leaves on branches of current season. Perianth segments elliptic-ovate, pilose outside, densely hairy within, greenish. Ovary densely tomentose, style bifid, plumose. Drupe c.5 mm, subglobose, pubescent to slightly pilose when mature, faintly reticulate.

    Fl. Per.: February-April.

    Type: “Frequent between Nekki and Prountche, 400-1000 m”.

    Distribution: N.W. Himalaya from the Indus eastward to Kumaon. Also Salt Range (Jhelum Dist.) and Baluchistan (fide Parker, l.c.; R.R. Stewart, l.c).

    Easily recognised by densely tomentose ovary and distinctly 3-nerved leaves. Found in N.W. Himalaya up to 1800 m.
