A shrub or small tree up to 4 m tall, branched. Leaves 4.5-12.5 x 2.5-4.0 cm, elliptic-lanceolate to oblanceolate. Flowers in extra-axillary peduncles. Calyx lobes shallowly obtuse, minutely ciliate. Corolla infundibuliform, lobes reflexed, obtuse. Berry ± globose, black.
Fl. Per.: January-April, also August-October.
Lectotype: Described from Chilli, Havana. Hb. Linn. 258/4 (LINN).
Distribution: A native of W. Indies, cultivated elsewhere.
Occasionally cultivated for its sweet scented white flowers.
