    Stems solitary to many, branched. Petiole of basal leaves indistinct. Nutlets 2.5-4 mm long, ± globose, margin broadly winged with a large or small aperture, dense papillose or sparsely so.

    Distribution: Egypt, Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Caspian Aral, Soviet C. Asia.

    Over its wide range, Paracaryum intermedium var. intermedium shows variability in leaf shape, pedicel length and fruit. Treated here var. intermedium includes forms with narrower leaves and nutlets densely papillose (Paracaryum intermedium var. papillosum), forms with broader leaves and with the aperture of nutlets large (Paracaryum intermedium var. intermedium) or small Paracaryum intermedium var. stellatum). Flowers are sometimes white (Kemal et al 2447, l.c.) The characters used to distinguish these taxa are not constant.
