Erect shrub. Leaves subsessile, 10-20 x 4-7.5 cm entire, smooth, glabrous, lanceolate, acute or obtusely acuminate, petiole 3-5 mm long; stipules grasping the stem, broad, awned. Inflorescence terminal corymbiform lax cymes, peduncle c. 2.5 cm long, branches short, brightly coloured, opposite decussate. Flowers scarlet or deep orange-red; pedicels 2-4 mm long; bracts and bracteoles short. Calyx-tube short, lobes obtuse, c. 1.5 mm long. Corolla-tube 2.5-4.5 cm long, glabrous, mouth contracted; lobes 15-17 x 3-5 mm. Stamens 4, filaments very short, anthers c. 3 mm long. Style exserted; stigma 2-lobed. Fruit not seen.

Type: Described from the Moluccas, Roxburgh Ic. Fined. 1784 (K).
Distribution: Native of Moluccas, Burma, Java, Borneo, Malaya. Cultivated throughout the tropics. Occasionally cultivated in Pakistan.
