Subshrub, tall, slender, much branched, branches circular in transverse section, smooth, green young branches slender, delicate, very frequently divericate, occasionally reflexed. Leaves spurred in the first place, lower subspiny. Cladode (2) 3-6 (-8) in each fascicle, needle-l ike to bristle-lik e, erect to ascendens, 3-12 mm long, often deciduous. Flowers hermaphrodite, 1-4 on the branches on the tip or in the axils. Perianth 3 mm long. Pedicel 3-3.5 mm long and articulated below the middle. Berry red, c. 5 mm in diameter.

Lectotype: Rawul Pindee, 15.4.(18)71, J. E. T. Aitchison 1222 (K).

All the 3 syntypes cited by Baker are present in the Kew Herbarium. Out of these, the above mentioned specimen is selected as the lectotype.
