Tufted or rhizomatous perennials. Leaf-blades flat. Panicle spreading at flowering, contracted before and after. Spikelets 3-flowered, the lowest florets male with 3 stamens, the uppermost bisexual with 2 stamens; rhachilla disarticulating above the glumes at maturity, not produced; glumes membranous, subequal, 3-nerved, about as long as the florets; lemmas of male florets ovate, hairy on the margins and on the back towards the tip, 5-nerved, sometimes awned; fertile lemma shorter than the others, ovate, 5-nerved, becoming hardened, hairy towards the tip, sometimes shortly awned. Caryopsis ellipsoid, often aborted.
A genus of ± 36 species, mainly in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere; 2 species occur in Pakistan.
