Latin octo, eight, and Greek, blepharo, eyelash, referring to the 8 peristome teeth of some species
Plants small, densely to loosely cespitose. Stems erect. Leaves crowded, erect to spreading-recurved, weakly bordered with elongate hyaline cells; chlorophyllose cells in a single layer; costa lacking. Peristome with prostome present or lacking.
Species ca. 15 (1 in the flora): tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
