Perennials, mostly 30–100 cm (rhizomes fibrous-rooted). Stems usually 1, erect (seldom branched, fistulose). Leaves basal and cauline; alternate; petiolate; blades palmately (± parallel) nerved, oblanceolate to spatulate, margins entire or toothed, faces glabrous or glabrate. Heads discoid, (30–70+) in racemiform or subthyrsiform arrays. Calyculi 0. Involucres turbinate to cylindric, 3–4+ mm diam. Phyllaries persistent, (4–)5(–8) in 1–2 series, erect, distinct, ovate to lanceolate, subequal, margins scarious (± keeled along mid-nerves, abaxially arachno-tomentose). Receptacles flat, alveolate, epaleate. Ray florets 0. Disc florets (4–)5(–8), bisexual, fertile; corollas usually yellow, rarely purple-tinged, tubes longer than cylindric throats, lobes 5, erect to spreading, lanceolate; style branches stigmatic in 2 lines, apices rounded-truncate. Cypselae (brown) ± terete, 10–20-nerved, glabrous; pappi persistent, of 150–200, white or stramineous, barbellulate bristles (in 3–4 series).
