Plants 30–50 cm. Stems moderately robust. Leaves: basal blades oblong to broadly spatulate, 100–200 × 10–50 mm. Involucres hemispheric, 15–20 × 20–35 mm. Phyllaries (± overlapping) broadly oblong to obovate, apices acute, mucro erect. 2n = 12.
Flowering Jun–Sep. Dry prairies, meadows, gravelly flats, rocky ridges; 400–1800 m; B.C.; Idaho, Mont., Oreg., Wash., Wyo.
Variety carthamoides is recognized by its relatively robust stems, large leaves and involucres, and overlapping, oblong to obovate phyllaries.
