Plants 15–30 cm. Stems villous or tomentose, ± woolly, sparsely glandular-stipitate. Leaves: basal blades lanceolate, 50–100(–150) × 8–15(–40) mm, margins coarsely serrate, faces softly villous, tomentose, stipitate-glandular. Heads 1–4. Involucres 8–10 × 12–15 mm. Phyllaries appressed, unequal, bases chartaceous, apices green.
Flowering Jun–Aug. Dry meadows, pine forests, brushy slopes; 1600–2200 m; Calif., Idaho, Oreg., Utah.
Variety lanulosa is recognized by its woolly pubescence and unequal phyllaries.
