Stems distinctly spreading-hirsute. 2 n = 18.
Flowering Aug–Oct. Dry woods; 400–700 m; Ark., Miss., Mo.
Variety palmeri largely replaces var. ulmifolia in the mountains of Arkansas. It is disjunct in southern Missouri and Mississippi. Reports from Alabama and Virginia need confirmation.
