Leaf blades trullate or broadly trullate, 5–8 cm, adaxial surface densely scabrous-pubescent, glabrescent. Inflorescence branches densely villous, variably glabrescent by anthesis. Flowers: hypanthium pubescent.
Flowering May–Jun; fruiting Sep–Oct. Brush, roadsides, woodland edges; 50–900 m; Ont.; Mass., Mich., N.H., N.Y., Vt., Va., Wis.
Variety asperifolia, like var. scabrida, has a wide range from the southern Great Lakes area to the Virginia Blue Ridge. It is particularly distinct, thus perhaps worthy of specific rank, and may be locally common.
