Crataegus membranacea Sargent; C. vaga Sargent

Leaves: blade ovate to broadly elliptic, proportionately wide (1.3–1.6:1). Inflorescence branches pubescent. Anthers red or pink. Pomes 7–10 mm diam.

Flowering Apr–Jun; fruiting Sep–Oct. Brush, field margins, open woodlands; 20–800 m; Man., Ont., Que.; Conn., Ill., Ind., Iowa, Maine, Md., Mass., Mich., Minn., Mo., N.H., N.Y., N.C., Ohio, Pa., R.I., Tenn., Vt., Va., W.Va., Wis.

Variety succulenta is found throughout the range of the species; it is less common southwards.
