Farfugium japonicum var. japonicum

Evergreen perennial herbs. Leaves radical and cauline, radical leaves tufted, involute in bud, densely long white villous when young, cordate, reniform, or flabellate, long petiolate, petiole dilated at base; cauline leaves bract-like. Involucre tubular, calyculate at base, bracts in 1 series, equal. Receptacle pitted, with teeth around pits. Ray florets ligulate, pistillate, in 1 series. Disc florets tubular, bisexual, fertile, many. Anthers bifid at base. Style branches mammillate at apex. Achenes cylindric, slightly narrowed at ends, densely pubescent. Pappus copious, bristles numerous, of variable lengths, short-pilose, persistent.

Three species in eastern Asia; one species represented by two varieties in Taiwan.
