Acaulescent perennial herbs, scapose. Leaves radical, entire to pinnatifid. Heads large, solitary. Involucre oblong or campanulate, bracts herbaceous, innermost in 1 series, nearly equal, elongate, outer bracts short, many seriate, often spreading and reflexed at maturity. Receptacle flat, glabrous. Corolla yellow, truncate, 5-lobed. Anthers sagittate at base. Style branches slender, obtuse. Achenes oblong or narrowly so, 4- or 5-angled or slightly compressed, 5- to 10-ribbed, narrowed at base, slender-beaked, often warty-tuberculate near base of beak. Pappus bristles simple, many, slender, unequal in length, persistent.

Sixty to 500 species depending on species concept, mainly in temperate to Arctic regions, especially abundant in the northern hemisphere; two species in Taiwan.
