Shrubs or subshrubs to 1.5 m tall; pubescence yellowish of simple, often moniliform hairs mixed with many-celled ones. Leaves dimorphic, the major leaf elliptic-ovate, 9-15 cm long, 5-7 cm wide, apically acute or acuminate, basally cuneate, sparsely pubescent, denser beneath; petiole 0.5-4 cm long; minor leaf broadly ovate, 2.5-4 cm long, 2-3 cm wide; petiole 0.5-4 cm long. Inflorescences several-flowered fascicles in leaf axils; pedicel 0.5-2 cm long. Flowers with calyx cupular, 3-6 mm long, 10-dentate, teeth linear-awl-shaped, 2-3 mm long; corolla pale purple or white, often drying dark, to 8-10 mm long, the lobes lanceolate, 6 mm long; filaments l mm long, anthers 3-3.5 mm long, sometimes pubescent. Berry red, globose, 6-9 mm across; fruiting calyx densely pubescent with simple and branched hairs, the teeth slightly longer than in flower; seeds numerous, pale yellow, ovate to subtriangular, 1.5-2 mm across, reticulate.
