Perennial herbs, 60-120 cm tall, branches, gray sericeous puberulous, later glabrescent. Petiole of lowermost and middle cauline leaves 1.5-2.5 cm long; blade oblong-obovate or elliptic-obovoid, 10-12×3.5-4 cm, upper surface sparsely sericeous puberulous or glabrescent, lower surface densely puberulous, 2-pinnatisect, segments (3-)4-5 pairs, distal lobes usually 3-, rarely 2- or 4-lobed, ultimate lobes lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 5-8×(2-)3-4 mm, apex acuminate; uppermost leaves and bracts pinnatisect or 3-sect or undivided. Inflorescences narrowly to broadly paniculate. Heads broadly ovoid or semiglobose, 3.5-4 mm in diam., short pedunculate, involucral bracts white pubescent. Outer florets 8-15. Central florets 18-25, barbate or non-barbate near lower portions of corolla. Achenes oblong-ovoid. Fl. and fr. Nov-Feb.
