    Stems erect, 0.7-1.5 m tall, sulcate, striate, branched, hairy or glabrate. Basal leaves withering at anthesis; radical and lower cauline leaves oblong-lanceolate, 10-30×3-8 cm, apex long-acuminate, base not amplexicaul, irregularly pinnatifid to incised, segments remote, puberulous or glabrate, upper leaves gradually smaller, linear-lanceolate, remotely spinose-dentate. Heads terminal, long peduncled, erect, 3-3.5 cm across; involucre globose, outer bracts cobwebby, shorter, short spinose, inner bracts longer, membranaceous; corolla purple, unequally and deeply 5-lobed, 16 mm long, lobes long. Achenes oblong, 3.5 mm long; pappus brown, 13 mm long.

    Japan, Korea and China. Taiwan, in grassy fields, 150-1,500 m, rare.
