    Plants stout, from stout rhizomes; stems ca. 1 m tall, glabrescent or glabrous, purple. Radical leaves chartaceous, cordate-orbicular, to 30 cm long and wide, margins strongly revolute while young, palmatipartite, segments palmately cleft to parted, lobes pinnately lobed or incised, lower surface densely pubescent while young; petiole winged; cauline leaves 3; petiole broadly sheathing, upper leaves smaller. Inflorescence corymbose; peduncle 2-9 cm long, densely crisp pubescent, bracts in 1 series, 9-12, broadly oblong, acuminate, not subtended by bract-like leaves. Ray florets in 1 series, ca. 10, pistillate, tube 8-12 mm long; corolla 4.8-6.5×0.8-1 mm; disc florets: corolla tubular, ca. 1.9-2.1 cm long, 5-lobed, tube 6.5-7 mm long. Achenes cylindric, ca. 9 mm long, glabrous. Pappus 6-7.5 mm long, rusty brown. Chromosome number, 2n = 60 (Peng & Hsu, 1978).

    Japan, Korea and southern China. Taiwan, moist places and on grassy slopes in mountainous areas in the north, rare.
