    Stems 50-150 cm tall, robust, striate, sparsely glandular, minutely puberulent. Petiole of radical leaves 3.5-20 cm. Radical leaves glandular puberulent on both surfaces, oblong to elliptic, 20-35 cm long, gradually narrowed at both ends, usually pinnatifid, rarely undivided, terminal segments oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, lateral segments 7 or 8 pairs, narrowly oblong, apex obtuse, margins usually irregularly pinnate-lobulate; cauline leaves gradually reduced in size, lower ones petiolate, elliptic to lanceolate; usually pinnatifid, upper ones smaller, linear-lanceolate, entire. Heads many, 10-15 mm long, in corymbs. Involucre tubular, 8.5-12.5×5-8 mm, hairy, scales 6-seriate, outer bracts smaller, ovate, 2.5 mm long, obtuse, median and inner bracts linear, apex with a scarious appendage. Corolla purple, 10-14 mm long. Receptacle densely setose. Achenes 3.5-4×1 mm. Chromosome number, 2n = 28 (Peng & Hsu, 1978).

    Japan and China. Taiwan, forest margins and grassy slopes, 1,000-2,200 m.
