Note: This genus is in need of global revision. Perrier de la Bathie recognised a single species in Madagascar (V. leptadenia), although he stated that it is probably a synonym of V. lanceata (=Smythia lanceata) described from the Seychelles (but now regarded to be widespread in Asia: see Friedmann, Flore des Seychelles) and V. maderaspatana from India. However our view is that the V. leptadenia is distinct from these, and that in addition there is at least 1 undescribed species.
