A very large genus of about 500 species of which 200 species in FSU. Most are of wide distribution, some are endemics to the Caucasus, Siberia, Central Asia and the Arctic regions. Only a few are of decorative value.

The following are also of horticultural value.

• P. mollissima Lehm.
• P. fedtschenkoana Siegfr. ex Th. Wolf.

Both species can be propagated by seed. They require a sunny position and well-drained soil. Z 5 (4).
